
Everything seems to be moving in the direction of converting propulsion systems to all-electric systems. But is this really the case?
Electric-powered machinery has been a hot topic for some time, and the explosion in fossil fuel prices has made the issue even more urgent. Goals are being set around the world to reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of global warming. Just think of the European Green Deal, for example, which aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. In addition, more and more cities are setting emission standards, which has significantly increased the need for zero-emission cars in these urban environments.
Electric yes or no?
In one form or another, the answer at this point can only be “maybe.” When one considers the absence of pollutant emissions, low noise, performance, and easier and cheaper management of the car over time, there is no doubt that electric is a practical alternative today, especially in the compact segment.
One of the main limitations of using electric-powered cars is the availability of a power source that is not always available locally. Models are now available that can be recharged from the regular electric grid, but with longer charging times.
Traditional critical issues, such as range and recharging time, are finding increasingly compelling answers as technologies evolve. Virtually all manufacturers claim a range of 6 to 8 hours with an average load on compact cars and a charging time of 8 hours.
There remains the problem of battery production, which requires the use of significant amounts of minerals such as copper, lithium and nickel, and their disposal at the end of their life cycle. However, some manufacturers are developing programs to reuse used batteries, giving them a second life and saving resources.

Indeed, electric cars are much simpler in construction, consist of few components, and do not require all the daily maintenance of conventional cars. There are no filters and fluids, just good oiling and normal hydraulic oil checks. A savings that some manufacturers say can exceed 30 percent in terms of cost and maintenance time.
The main obstacle at the moment seems to be price, which is already higher for compact equipment than its diesel counterparts. Precisely for this reason, manufacturers are considering alternative deployment channels (most notably rental) that can free user companies from the burden of purchase and ownership costs.
A final aspect to consider is residual and resale value. Electric construction equipment is still under development, and the number of machines on the market is far less than the number of conventional diesel machines. In addition, most used electric construction machines are currently in their first life cycle and have not yet been transacted in the used market.
